Give yourself permission to take a break. That's right, the #SaturdayMorningHustle is good with the idea of taking a break (occasionally). Sometimes you can get more done after recharging your batteries. The only thing you can control is your effort and your attitude, but even that has its limits. You must always be striving to first #WorkSmart before you #WorkHard to maximize efficiency and impact. That can include taking a step back for 5 minutes, a half day or a long 3-day weekend to gain perspective, clear your head or just regain your strength. This isn't the normal operating procedure, but the random reset we all need from time-to-time. After all, Labor Day is a holiday (DAY OFF) to celebrate the work you do on a regular basis. Continuing on the #SaturdayMorningHustle theme from last week: Success is a journey and not a destination and the path is full of unexpected deviations. Today on the podcast, I'm using my own long and winding journey from my first business (when was only 15) in the music industry to where I am now as the head of a strategic planning and business development consulting firm. The path between the two is not anything I had planned, but being adaptable and keeping myself moving in the right direction ultimately offered the potential for personal and business success. ⠀ ⠀ The key is learning how to balance "sticking with the plan" with knowing "when to get out" of a plan that just won't work BUT not too soon or making major changes too often. A few things every business needs, but CEOs just don't want to take the time to plan for….. a #SaturdayMorningHustle plan to prepare your business for the worse while staying focused on being the best. ⠀ ⠀ A few themes were a part of my week that I want to share with you today as something you can work on today (and tomorrow):⠀ 1. Crisis management and communication protocols⠀ 2. Succession planning⠀ 3. Reputation management⠀ ⠀ Why do these things go together? I'll tell you. First, no one wants to plan for bad things like a crisis, the loss of an important business leader or unflattering reviews BUT you need to. Just like insurance, you need to have protocols, action steps and decision making processes in place BEFORE YOU NEED THEM. Just like insurance, you hope you never need it, but when you do it's a major factor in continuing successfully. ⠀ ⠀ Listen to the podcast today, as I explain all three, why they are important and the steps you need to take this weekend to begin these processes. Too many C-Suite leaders use the excuse of "taking away from day-to-day operations to not future plan. So my answer is to do it on the weekend, Now you don't have an excuse. For Success, Build The Foundation FIRST! #SaturdayMorningHustle ⠀ ⠀ It's an old saying but it applies perfectly to start-ups, entrepreneurs and business owners: "Crawl before you walk". Seems simple, but too many people want overnight success and do not want to be patient. The process of creating a business structure for the "Great Idea" that could become a start-up or changing and existing business plan for a major pivot is not the sexy part of entrepreneurship. It's hard work. It's saying No more than Yes because the audience, the market, competition, cost and other realities won't allow for every crazy idea to be explored. It's finding what works best and do that. A lot of that. It's a whole lot of paperwork. It's being patient.⠀ ⠀ Why? Because that's crawling before you walk. Once you have a well-developed and vetted idea, you can build a brand to support the product/service. Then you can create the marketing strategy, the sales process, the distribution and delivery mechanisms. Now, you can start. Without all that, you will most likely not draw any attention at all and fail. If you draw attention but can't actually conduct a transaction, you fail. Even if you get attention and conduct the first transactions, can you sustain that? Once you can sustain your business, you have something that can be successful and create real wealth and opportunities for you, your family and friends.⠀ ⠀ That's the ultimate goal. Take the time to give yourself the best opportunity to reach it.⠀ ⠀ Bonus Advice: If you’re working a product or business just to get rich, stop now and go get a J-O-B somewhere else. #SaturdayMorningHustle advice for handling interruption to your schedule, system or process (your comfort zone). After a week of travel (for business) I'm way outside my normal routine. Even though I'm not as structured as many people, I do like having an idea of what needs to be done, in what order, how long something should take, etc…. ⠀ ⠀ But the key to being successful is the ability to handle situations that take you out of your comfort zone. That's often where the best work occurs. Don't be afraid of getting out of your routine, embrace it.
